WINDRUSH IMMERSIVE EXPERIENCE
A multi-sensory exhibition using virtual reality
to explore the legacy of the Windrush generation
CreoMotion Studio collaborated with Temple of Kulture to help create the Windrush VR Experience, part of a wider immersive exhibition telling the story of the Windrush generation. The goal was to use immersive technology to emotionally connect audiences with the lived experiences of Caribbean migrants before their journey to the UK.

The Problem
A key creative challenge was visualising a period and emotional state that exists mostly in memory and oral history — specifically, what life felt like for the Windrush generation before leaving their home countries. The experience needed to be historically respectful, emotionally authentic, and accessible to a wide public audience.

The Solution
We developed a real-time VR environment designed to place users inside a pre-departure Caribbean setting, focusing on atmosphere, cultural detail, and storytelling through environment design. The experience balanced historical grounding with cinematic immersion, allowing users to emotionally connect with the narrative rather than simply observe it.

Results
The Windrush VR experience helped transform historical storytelling into an interactive, embodied experience, allowing audiences to connect emotionally with the journey and context of the Windrush generation. The project supported cultural education through immersive technology and contributed to a wider multi-sensory exhibition that blended physical installation with digital storytelling. It also demonstrated the value of VR as a powerful medium for heritage, education, and cultural preservation, showcasing how immersive environments can bring historically significant narratives to life for modern audiences.
