ETHNOACTING IN VR FOR COGNITIVE EMPATHY

Advancing empathy training through evidence-based immersive technology

Ethnoacting VR is an innovative immersive training experience that blends psychology, performance, and virtual reality to build resilience, empathy, and emotional intelligence. Grounded in academic research and real human testimonies, the experience allows participants to engage deeply with lived experiences. The concept has been realised as a powerful immersive platform featuring emotionally driven VR environments and intuitive user journeys, supporting use across healthcare, education, performance training, and corporate development.

The Problem 

Healthcare and training sectors face a growing need to develop cognitive empathy, resilience, and emotional intelligence, particularly in high-pressure environments such as nursing and patient care. Traditional training methods like classroom learning and role-play often fail to capture the emotional complexity of real human experiences, making it difficult for participants to fully understand patient perspectives. This creates a gap between theoretical knowledge and real-world emotional readiness, highlighting the need for more immersive, evidence-based training solutions that can effectively build empathy and emotional regulation.

The solution

Ethnoacting VR addresses this gap by combining evidence-based psychology, verbatim performance techniques, and immersive Virtual Reality to create deeply engaging, emotionally authentic training experiences. Participants are placed inside carefully designed virtual environments where they listen to and embody real human testimonies, allowing them to safely experience complex emotional perspectives first-hand. This immersive approach strengthens empathy, resilience, and emotional regulation while providing educators and organisations with a scalable, measurable, and impactful training solution across healthcare, education, and professional development sectors.

Results

The Ethnoacting VR pilot, tested in March 2025 with nursing students and healthcare apprentices, demonstrated strong early indicators of effectiveness. Participants engaged in immersive VR sessions that contrasted patient perspectives with nurse attitudes, supported by survey research and statistical analysis to measure impact. Qualitative feedback highlighted highly positive experiences, with participants reporting deeper emotional understanding and a stronger connection to authentic patient perspectives. The results provide promising evidence that VR-based embodied storytelling can be a powerful and scalable tool for cultivating cognitive empathy in healthcare education. Full findings are scheduled for publication in 2026 in a Routledge handbook on applied drama in nursing and healthcare education.
